This is a beautiful island located in the middle of Lake Cocibolca called Ometepe. The Island has impressive flora and fauna and two  volcanoes nicknamed Fire and Water. One volcano is covered in a cloud rainforest with a lake on top and the other is covered in ash with lava at the top. ECS - FIEMCA has 7 communities around the "water" volcano and 1 community at the base of the "fire" volcano. All of these communities are very poor. One of the main difficulties is transportation. In order to get to the island, you need to travel for 2 hours by boat. This isolation means that all imported products, including food, are triple the price. The island also does not have a hospital, only small clinics to care for people with minor illnesses. ECS - FIEMCA has been on Ometepe Island for 8 years working specifically with women. They present the gospel of salvation and teach about the prevention of diseases. There are many mosquitos on the island and this produces a number of diseases. We have conducted workshops on how to make natural repellent using herbs grown there. We have also taught workshops on how to make pizzas, crafts, piñatas, etc. We encourage the women to start their own business and provide them with basic financial/marketing training in order to be successful. We have wonderful testimonies of women who have given their lives to Christ, live healthier lives, and have set up their own businesses as a result of our teachings.
